Rug Size Guide: How to Choose the Right Rug for Every Room

The complete rug size guide — living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, and hallways — with placement rules so your rug makes the room look bigger and finished.

A rug that's too small is one of the most common interior design mistakes. The right size makes a room look bigger, more finished, and more expensive. Here's how to choose.

General rules

  • Bigger is usually better. A generous rug ties furniture together.
  • Leave a border of floor — typically around 20–45 cm (8–18 in) between rug and walls in most rooms.
  • Anchor furniture. At least the front legs of seating should sit on the rug.

Living room

All legs on

In large rooms, a rug big enough for all furniture legs creates a unified zone.

Front legs on

The most common approach: front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug.

Floating

A small rug only under the coffee table — generally best avoided unless the room is very small.

Common sizes: 160×230 cm (5×8 ft) for small rooms; 200×300 cm (8×10 ft) for most living rooms; larger for big spaces.

Bedroom

  • Under the bed: the rug should extend well beyond the sides of the bed — ideally around 45–60 cm (18–24 in) on each side.
  • Queen beds: often 200×300 cm (8×10 ft).
  • King beds: often 250×350 cm (9×12 ft) or larger.
  • Alternatives: runners on each side of the bed.

Dining room

Chairs should stay on the rug when pulled out — about 60–75 cm (24–30 in) beyond the table on all sides.

Hallways and entryways

  • Runners: leave about 10–15 cm (4–6 in) of floor on each side.
  • Entry rugs: proportionate to the door width or larger.

Kitchens

Runners in front of the sink or between counters add comfort.

Layering rugs

Layer a smaller patterned rug over a large jute or sisal rug for texture and to stretch a smaller budget.
